A Bench Between Days

Jason hadn’t planned on joining the Sunday picnic. He’d seen the family text chain lighting up all week, ignored the invites, and let the excuses build: Too tired. Too busy. Maybe next time. But his sister Nora had a way of breaking through.

She just showed up.

“We’re not doing anything intense,” she said, handing him a tote bag. “Just sandwiches. Some sunlight. And we got your favorite chips.”

So he went. Not because he felt ready, but because part of him wanted to want to feel better.

The park was open and gentle, not too crowded. Kids played in the distance, dogs chased frisbees. Jason found a bench near a quiet patch of trees, and sat with his mom while Nora laid out lunch on a checkered blanket.

“You’ve been quiet lately,” his mom said, handing him a bottle of water. “How’s the new medication?”

He shrugged. “Helps me sleep, mostly. Still feels like I’m under a blanket I can’t see through.”

She nodded. “That’s how it works sometimes. Slowly. You don’t notice until one day it’s not quite so heavy.”

Jason picked at the sandwich. “I hate that I can’t just snap out of it.”

“Depression isn’t a light switch,” she said gently. “But you showed up. That’s a kind of strength.”

They spent the afternoon in easy company — no pressure, no probing. Jason took a short walk with Nora near the lake and let himself sit on the grass afterward without checking his phone. Just breathing. Just existing.

As they packed up, Nora smiled. “Same time next week?”

Jason paused. Then nodded. “Yeah… I think I’d like that.”

Notes:

  • Medication: Antidepressants often take time to work and may initially help with sleep or anxiety before mood improves.
  • Outing: Simple family outings provide structure, social support, and gentle stimulation for those in emotional recovery.
  • Relaxation: Quiet settings with no pressure can foster genuine rest and reduce internal stress cycles.
  • Motivation: Small choices — like showing up — are powerful acts of recovery.
  • Family: Presence without pressure is often the best support.
