Untangled (Second edition)

Nia had always worn braids, but they weren’t her choice. Her family insisted on neat, tight braids that lasted for weeks. They were practical, yes, but for Nia, they felt like a cage—her hair restrained, her individuality suppressed.

One weekend, when she was alone, she decided it was time to reclaim herself. She sat in the sunlit bathroom, scissors in hand, and cut through the braids. Strands of hair fell to the floor like small acts of rebellion. For the first time in years, her hair was free, curly and untamed, cascading naturally around her shoulders.

Running her fingers through it, Nia felt more than just softness. She felt freedom—freedom to choose her style, freedom from expectations, freedom to simply be herself. Each untangled curl was a small victory, a release of old pressures and insecurities.

From that day on, her hair became a daily reminder: freedom wasn’t just an idea—it could grow, move, and shine, just like her curls.

Themes and Takeaways:

  • Hair can symbolize personal freedom and self-expression

  • Breaking free from imposed expectations can be empowering

  • Small physical acts (like changing hairstyles) can mirror inner transformation

  • Self-care and self-expression are valid forms of resistance

⚠️ What to Keep in Mind:

  • Cutting hair is not permanent, but at the time of cutting it is—consider the emotional and practical impact

  • Embrace the natural texture and growth; it’s part of your journey

  • Freedom can also be expressed without cutting hair, through styling or embracing natural textures
