The Pause Between Sounds

She turned everything off and noticed what remained. Periods of quiet have been associated with reduced mental fatigue and improved attention, allowing the brain to recover from constant stimulation (Kraus and Chandrasekaran 142).

Even brief moments of silence can support emotional regulation and stress recovery by lowering cognitive load (Bernardi et al. 445). The stillness felt unfamiliar at first, then welcoming. Calm did not arrive as emptiness. It arrived as space, and she filled it with breath.
